Morocco: Moulay Hassan, programmed to sit on the throne

The Crown Prince of Morocco is preparing for the highest office. Moulay Hassan is now training in an office at the royal palace.

It's an open secret, in the corridors of the palace: Moulay Hassan, the successor to the Moroccan throne, should take up the torch when Mohammed VI will judge that he is fit to rule. And while the current king of Morocco is taking more and more of a step back, the crown prince begins his "training". Because it has been more than a year since Moulay Hassan was of legal age to be king.

Now 19, the son of Mohammed V has his office at the royal palace, says AfricaIntelligence. A palace in which "he gets used to the mysteries of power in the absence of his father, who has been living in France for several months", specifies the French newspaper.

After a first private stay in June, Mohammed VI went back and forth to Morocco, especially for Eid or even the Throne Day. But to stay at his mother's bedside, the king preferred to put his suitcases in France. What give a little more power to his son? The latter will have to be a little patient…

Moulay Hassan also went to Paris for almost a month. But the call for studies forced Moulay Hassan to return to Benguerir, on the benches of the Faculty of Governance and Economic and Social Sciences of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University.

The irony, explains Africa Intelligence, is that Moulay Hassan's office was set up in the royal cabinet for a simple internship.

more and more present

In the absence of King Mohammed VI, the future Hassan III therefore has the opportunity to get used to power. Because if he is used to participating in formal meetings, Moulay Hassan is not yet seasoned in power. In 2018, King Mohammed VI had already had to move away from the Cherifian kingdom and left day-to-day business to palace executives. His son was still too young to take on any role.

This time, Mohammed VI changed his strategy. He relies on his close entourage to follow political, security and health issues, which he does not want to let go. The opportunity for Moulay Hassan to observe. The future monarch would have already participated in two councils of ministers, last year and this summer.

Finally, recalls Africa Intelligence, Moulay Hassan attended, almost two years ago, the negotiations between Trump's adviser, Jared Kushner, and Morocco concerning the Abraham Accords. An important file for the kingdom, but also for the son of Mohammed VI who, decidedly, is taking up more and more space.
