Prime Minister Choguel Maïga, who left his post after being hospitalized, would like to return to his post. He announced that he was ready.
End of August, Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga was appointed interim Prime Minister. He then replaced Choguel Maïga, hospitalized. The international community had not gained in flexibility: the Minister of Territorial Administration, also spokesperson for the junta, was indeed one of the spearheads of the anti-West discourse of the Malian authorities. Abdoulaye Maïga had notably denounced the “neocolonial, paternalistic and condescending posture” of France.
Choguel Kokalla Maïga could however return to business. This Friday morning, we learn that the Prime Minister who was convalescent asked President Goïta to put him back in his post. “I came to inform the president that I am able to return to work and in a few days the head of state will announce the date,” simply announced Choguel Maïga.
After his stroke last August, we did not know whether or not Choguel Maïga would be able to resume his duties one day. But the latter seems to want to return to the front of the stage. The only uncertainty: Goïta has not yet announced whether or not he agrees.
If he resumes his post, Choguel Maïga should not deviate from the current line of the Malian authorities, who still wish to strengthen their collaboration with Russia and no longer have to submit to French policy.
Last February, Maïga gave an interview to the French press. He had assured: “We have inoculated Africans with the virus of defeat. The Malian people want to be free, and we are going to free them”. An attitude that greatly displeased Paris, which was not really impatient with a possible return of the Prime Minister.
Appointed head of government in June 2021, will Choguel Maïga regain the confidence of his president? And will he have to face the new ambitions of Abdoulaye Maïga, who would certainly see himself continuing his mission?
