Former President John Dramani Mahama has been nominated for the Ghanaian presidential election in 2024 by his party, the NDC. What, already, to launch the presidential campaign?
We take the same and start again ? Or almost. Because, in 2024, if Ghana will elect its president, the current head of state will not be a candidate for his own succession: Nana Akufo-Addo will indeed complete his second and last term, as required by the Ghanaian Constitution. He pledged, at the end of 2021, to hand over power to his successor on January 7, 2025, the date on which the future president elected by Ghanaians will be sworn in.
Faced with the dolphin of Nana Akufo-Addo, voters will be able to vote for a personality they know well: President of Ghana between 2012 and 2016, John Dramani Mahama indeed hopes to regain his chair as president nearly nine years later. At 64, he was acclaimed by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC): with nearly 99% of the vote, he literally crushed his opponent, Kojo Bonsu. And will therefore wear the colors of the opposition party.
John Dramani Mahama has revenge to take: in 2016, he lost to Nana Akufo-Addo, just like in 2020. The NDC is putting the odds on its side, betting on a personality well known to Ghanaians. Opposite, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will have the misfortune to present a novice.
For the NPP, "is it possible"?
It remains to be seen who will be opposed to John Dramani Mahama. Inevitably, the NPP will seek an experienced personality. Is Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia the man for the job? Two years ago, activists launched a campaign on his behalf. The vice-president had then asked to let him concentrate on his work.
But last month, Bawumia posed as a potential dolphin for Afuko-Addo: he posted a less enigmatic message on his social networks. If he is running for the NPP, the vice-president already has his slogan: “It is possible! It is next November that the presidential party will choose its candidate.

But for John Dramani Mahama, the possibility of serving a new presidential term is also real. The economic crisis in which Ghana is plunged - one of the worst in history - the soaring prices of daily life products and the country's soaring debt are all assets for the opponent.
