Former Cameroon international striker Samuel Eto'o is, according to several sources, targeting the presidency of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot).
Former striker and greatest scorer in Cameroon history, Samuel Eto'o, has he abandoned his plans to become a coach in Europe? This is what the sports press reports. According to several newspapers, meetings between Eto'o and African football personalities would have led the ex-player to possibly present his candidacy for the presidency of Fecafoot.
Fecafoot, currently chaired by Seidou Mbombo Njoya, will hold its general assembly on Tuesday, July 13. With the rumors circulating about Eto'o's candidacy for the presidency, nocturnal masses gathered, this weekend, representatives of the other candidates, namely the outgoing president Njoya and the former player of Chelsea and Real Madrid, Geremi Njitap.
Some candidates would indeed try to exclude, de facto, Samuel Eto'o from the presidential race by trying to impose a motion on the general assembly. The draft text would aim to deprive holders of dual nationality from running for the presidency of Fecafoot. A measure that would therefore only affect Eto'o, holder of a Spanish passport.
Eto'o at the head of Fecafoot, info or intox?
“Just like in politics, the low maneuvers have started. », Comments the first media which relayed the news. According to Afrik.com and Afrik Foot, Fecafoot is the scene of a lot of friction, especially between the candidates and some members of the commissions who would support Eto'o's candidacy.
With the next African Cup of Nations (CAN) to be held in Cameroon, the presidency of Fecafoot would be a springboard for its president. The stakes are therefore enormous. Eto'o is however already a legend in Cameroon, in Africa and in the world. All-time top scorer in the national team, he also has two Champions Leagues with FC Barcelona and Inter Milan. But running for the presidency of Fecafoot would not assure Eto'o of being elected, Didier Drogba learned it the hard way in Côte d'Ivoire.
Cameroonian Minister of Sports, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, this Sunday opposed the electoral process of the general assembly on Tuesday. He specifies that the statutes of the assembly await prior validation. And this, before the appointment of the government commissioners for the general assembly. A return to the status quo is therefore envisaged, while waiting for the talks within Fecafoot to be successful. For his part, Eto'o has not yet commented on the "rumors".
However, Monday will be decisive: the statutes will be published before the general assembly. If the latter is held tomorrow, the texts will contain the deliberation of the committees on the dual nationality of candidates.
