Mélenchon received by Sonko in Dakar

Mélenchon reçu par Sonko à Dakar

This Wednesday, May 15 marks the start of a significant four-day visit to Senegal for Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the founder of La France insoumise (LFI).

The first meeting of this mission is a meeting with Ousmane Sonko, head of the Senegalese government and leader of the Pastef party. This visit is of particular importance, since Mélenchon is the first French political figure to be welcomed by the new power, only six weeks after the victory of Bassirou Diomaye Faye in the Senegalese presidential election.

The relationship between La France insoumise (LFI) and Pastef was highlighted as soon as Mélenchon arrived, with warm thanks from Sonko for the unwavering support offered by Mélenchon and his political party. Sonko highlighted Mélenchon's continued commitment to freedom, democracy and justice, saying that support had never wavered.

This meeting between Mélenchon and Sonko is not limited to praise. It also constitutes recognition of the democratic transition underway in Senegal. Mélenchon took the opportunity to praise Sonko's role in this process, calling him a major figure in the Senegalese people's quest to control their future.

The day will continue with an event of capital importance: a debate at the University of Dakar on the future of relations between Africa and Europe. This debate will also mark Sonko's first public trip as Prime Minister, adding an additional dimension to this visit already rich in political and diplomatic implications.
