For many years, Senegal has dominated the African FIFA rankings. In the latest index, released on August 12, 2021, the country is 21st globally.
Last Thursday, FIFA published its ranking of international selections, still dominated by Belgium of Eden Hazard. The kingdom now has 1 FIFA points and is ahead of the Italian European champions or the French world champions.
First African nation to appear in the ranking, Senegal is 21st internationally with 1 points. The Senegalese “Lions” have come a long way: in the early 545s, the country was around 2010th place. Since then, the Senegalese selection has garnered points.
But above all, FIFA has revised its way, until then considered unfair, of classifying the selections. Prior to 2018, the world ranking was based on an average established over a period of time. With the new system, which entered into force in 2018, points are added or subtracted according to the matches won or lost.
Senegal, Tunisia and Algeria on the podium
However, with 17 matches won in the last 28 meetings, Senegal has a very satisfactory record. However, the country is still on the hunt for its very first Africa Cup of Nations. Like Belgium, the “Land of Teranga” dominates the ranking despite an empty trophy cabinet.
Behind Senegal, there are pillars of continental football: Tunisia then Algeria, respectively 28th and 30th nations in the world. First country in sub-Saharan Africa behind Senegal, Nigeria is currently 5th African country, just behind Morocco. The country that has progressed the most in this FIFA ranking is Sierra Leone, which has gained 15 places.
