Mohamed Salah to become the highest paid African player in the world?

Liverpool have made Mohamed Salah's contract extension a priority. The Reds are ready to raise the player's salary.

After his contract extension in the summer of 2018 - which now places him under contract with FC Liverpool until 2023 - Mohamed Salah has become one of the highest paid African players on the planet. The Egyptian earns more than 11 million euros gross per season, not counting any bonuses. In the ranking of the highest paid African players in the world, only three footballers do better: the Algerian from Manchester City, Riyad Mahrez - 11,8 million euros -, Cédric Bakambu - the Congolese from the Chinese club Beijing Guoan would earn about 18 million euros - and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, whose emoluments exceed 20 million annually.

But Mohamed Salah has not said his last word. Because if there is a little less than two years of contract with the Egyptian, Liverpool are currently discussing a possible new extension. Last May, the Pharaohs star appealed to his club. He said he "wanted to win the Premier League again, the Champions League again". In other words, he was saying half-heartedly that he was ready to stay at Liverpool. But the player regretted that no discussion had been initiated.

One of Liverpool's three priorities

However, the British club have just started discussions with several of their players. Among the youngest executives, Alisson and Fabinho could thus extend to the Reds until 2026. But it is for the three stars of the club that the file is complicated: Salah, Mané and Firmino have indeed, all three, big salary expectations. And in the current environment, it will be difficult for Liverpool to extend their three frames.

Less efficient this season, the Brazilian seems to be in the hot seat. Liverpool should indeed focus on the contract extensions of Mané and Salah. And according to the sports press, the management of the Reds would be ready to make a significant effort to extend the Egyptian, courted by other major European clubs and whose transfer is estimated at more than 100 million euros.

The pro-Liverpool media evoke discussions already well underway and a first proposal for a revised weekly salary would have been made, if Salah extends. An amount which, increased, would make the Egyptian the highest paid player in the history of the Reds, but also the highest paid African player in the world. Salah would currently receive nearly 235 euros per week. But while Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid would like to attract Salah to their ranks, the Pharaoh will be spoiled for choice: continue the Liverpool adventure or wait for a transfer next summer.

The Reds will in any case qualify for the Champions League this season. Last year, Salah was one of the best players in the squad, in a mixed season, with 22 goals scored and 5 assists.
